Making Point Spreads by Oddsmakers and Using Algorithms

by Wayne Root

Monday, Dec 23, 2024

The Great Equalizer in Sports Betting: The Point SpreadBetting on sports is becoming quite the hobby, as more and more states legalize across America. Besides, watching games is way more fun when you’ve got a little skin in the game. As you'd imagine, the NFL is king, drawing the vast majority of the bets placed in the United States every year. The point spread. The “great equalizer.” Just how do sportsbooks  and oddsmakers come up with this all-important number? Most of the time, oddsmakers try to come up with a point spread betting infrastructure that creates the least risk for the sportsbook and effectively guarantees a profit even when your bet wins. The Sports Book’s PositionMany people assume that the point spread is designed so that both outcomes in a game—(1) the favorite covering and (2) the underdog covering—are equally likely given the relative strength of the teams. That’s close, but not quite right. And at times, impossible. The majority of the time, sportsbooks try to create a point spread with a margin of victory that attracts equal betting on both teams. Sometimes this is equivalent to a results-oriented spread—one which creates a truly level playing field—but not always because the public isn’t necessarily a rational actor. How the Public May CounterThe public may counter with their own betting lines by developing their own numbers. At their core, a sports betting algorithm functions by analyzing past and real-time data to predict the likelihood of different outcomes in a game. This prediction is based on a variety of factors, including team performance, individual player statistics, weather conditions, and even odds offered by bookmakers. These algorithms use statistical models to analyze these factors and create probability estimates for the outcome of a game. These are the public’s own weapons. For example, a sports betting algorithm might assess the probability of a specific team winning based on previous performance and other variables. Bettors can then use this information to compare with odds from different sportsbooks and decide whether to place a bet. This process is often referred to as identifying value bets—where the odds provided by a bookmaker are higher than the algorithm's probability of a certain outcome. This is where sharp action comes into play. Machine Learning Algorithms Machine learning algorithms are now commonly used in sports betting. These algorithms improve over time by learning from past data and refining their predictions based on new information. By processing large datasets, machine learning algorithms and models can identify patterns that humans might miss, which can lead to more accurate predictions in complex scenarios like live betting.Sports Books Set Risk-Free LinesWhy do sportsbooks want equal betting on both teams most of the time? Simple. It’s a risk-free way for them to make money. If there is equal money on both sides, there is no risk for the sportsbook. They don’t turn a huge profit on any single game but they do it from a much bigger tray and they do it a couple of million times. Over time, it adds up a lot.Public Betting As a collective, the general betting public is not always a rational actor. People will bet on certain teams more heavily than others, even when that team doesn’t deserve it based on its quality of play. Teams that attract an irrational amount of betting money are known as “public teams.” You will find them in every sport. They tend to be the high-profile teams with massive fan bases and (sometimes but definitely not always) history of success.Identify Public TeamsThere is no universally accepted grouping of public teams, but you won’t find much argument that the teams listed in the table below qualify. Here’s a list of the most recognized public teams in America. Dallas CowboysGreen Bay PackersNew England PatriotsAlabama Crimson TideNotre Dame Fighting IrishGolden State WarriorsLos Angeles LakersDuke Blue DevilsKentucky WildcatsUNC Tar HeelsChicago CubsLos Angeles DodgersNew York MetsNew York YankeesToronto Maple LeafsWhen oddsmakers list public teams at so-called accurate betting odds, the public is likely to bet on them more heavily and potentially put the sportsbook at risk of a loss if the public team covers the spread. For that reason, teams like the Dallas Cowboys and Duke Blue Devils and others mentioned above will often be bigger favorites than the analytics indicate they should be.Do Sports Books Take Positions? Many sportsbooks are willing to “take a position” in certain circumstances, which basically means that they will set/leave the point spread so that the sportsbook needs a certain result in order to come out in the black. When you see one sportsbook open a point spread at a different number than its competitors, those oddsmakers are likely taking a position on that game. They know that the lower/higher spread will attract bets on the team that is laying fewer/getting more points, but they are okay with that because their analysis says that the other outcome is more likely. Bookmakers don’t always need to be correct when they take a position; they just need to be right often enough to be profitable on the whole. Chances are that the sportsbook you’re using has done just that. It’s still in business after all.Monte Carlo Test with A.I. Monte Carlo simulations are used to model the probabilities of different outcomes by running simulations thousands of times. This technique is especially useful in sports betting as it accounts for the inherent uncertainty and variability in sporting events. Many companies and individual bettors have become interested and have started using artificial intelligence-based algorithms to predict game outcomes. For example, several popular sportsbooks use algorithms to adjust odds in real-time based on ongoing match data. Bettors can also use platforms that provide algorithm-driven predictions to help them make betting decisions.Algorithms Identify Value BetsIt’s also important to recognize that while algorithms can identify value bets, they are not a guarantee of profit. Sports betting algorithms offer valuable insights for bettors looking to make more informed decisions. However, they are not foolproof and should be used responsibly. By understanding the inner workings of these algorithms, how they are developed, and their limitations, bettors can enhance their experience without falling into the trap of over-reliance on technology. No matter how sophisticated the algorithm, gambling always involves risk. Use algorithms as tools for responsible gambling, and never bet more than you can afford to lose.

NFL Monday Night Player Prop

by ASA, Inc.

Sunday, Dec 22, 2024

NFL MONDAY NIGHT PLAYER PROP - Green Bay Packers - Josh Jacobs - Over 88.5 Rushing Yards: Current Form: Josh Jacobs has been in exceptional form this season, showcasing his ability to carry the load for Green Bay's offense. Heading into this game, Jacobs ranks third in the NFL with 1,147 rushing yards and is 4th in rushing attempts per game. Matchup Advantage: The Saints' defense has struggled significantly against the run this season, ranking 30th in the league by allowing 4.9 yards per rush. They've also given up an average of 134 rushing yards per game, which places them 27th league-wide. This matchup is particularly favorable for Jacobs, who thrives against weaker run defenses.  Green Bay has faced 5 rush defenses so far this season ranked 20th or lower.  In those games Jacobs has averaged 104 YPG on the ground. Game Script: We expect the Packers to get a lead (14 point favorites) and lean heavily on their run game to control the clock and the game's tempo, especially with the Saints' pass defense performing better than their rush defense. A strategy focusing on ground control could see Jacobs exceeding his rushing yard prop. Statistical Insights: Given the Saints' defensive stats, Jacobs has a clear path to go over 88.5 rushing yards. His season average of approximately 82.3 yards per game, combined with the Saints' vulnerabilities, suggests he's likely to hit this mark. Jacobs has also forced 60 missed tackles this season, second among running backs, indicating his ability to make something out of nothing even when the defense is stacked against him.  Conclusion: Given the matchup, Josh Jacobs stands a strong chance of going over his 88.5 rushing yards prop. His current form, the Saints' poor run defense, and a game script that could favor a ground-heavy approach all point towards a big night for Jacobs on the ground. Betting on Jacobs to exceed this threshold could be a wise choice for those looking at player props for this Monday Night Football game

NBA Christmas Day Breakdown

by AAA Sports

Sunday, Dec 22, 2024

The NBA Cup competition, FWIW, is in the rearview mirror and the Association now moves on to the last meaningful competition until the playoffs start in April. The annual block of games on Christmas marks the unofficial start of the season, when casual fans start to become interested and the country sits around the tree and overeats on hoops. As usual, there are five games on the schedule. Adam Silver was obviously surprised by Cleveland’s white-hot start this year because the Cavs and their NBA-best record will not be playing. Neither will the Oklahoma City Thunder, Memphis Grizzlies or Houston Rockets, who own the first-, second- and third-best records in the Western Conference.A look at this year's docket:SAN ANTONIO SPURS @ NEW YORK KNICKS (12pm) Knicks -9.0O/U – 226.5 Victor Wembanyama has the Spurs in the mix for a playoff spot, and he’ll be introduced to much of the country when he goes up against the Knicks. America will be seeing a new-look Knicks team, with Julius Randle gone and big man Karl-Anthony Towns in his place. New York is pretty much in the same spot as it was a year ago, and the goal is to finish as high as it can during the regular season, stay healthy and hopefully avoid Boston until the Eastern Conference finals.MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES @ DALLAS MAVERICKS (2:30pm) Mavericks -3.5O/U – 224.0 Did the Timberwolves panic after getting tossed off the bus by the Mavericks in WC playoff finals last spring? The Towns-to-NY deal that brought Julius Randle on board hasn’t had the desired effect – Minnesota is now just another team in the early going, and how they break a log-jam that includes the Lakers, Nuggets, Suns and Warriors is anyone’s guess. How things go the rest of the year depends on whether or not ISO-centric stars Randle and Anthony Edwards can find a way to co-exist on the court PHILADELPHIA 76ERS @ BOSTON CELTICS (5pm) Celtics -9.0O/U – 223.0 Give Adam Silver one wish, and he’d sub Cleveland for Philadelphia. The 76ers just can’t get healthy, and the Big Three (Embiid, George and Maxey) have hardly been on the court together. The result is twice as many losses as wins, and uncomfortable questions about whether they can even make the Play-In Tournament. Boston, meanwhile, is fighting boredom as the Celtics continue to fire up 3-pointer after 3-pointer. If they go in, Boston wins. If they don’t, well Memphis and Chicago proved that the Celtics can be beaten.LOS ANGELES LAKERS @ GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS (8pm) Warriors -4.5O/U – 230.0 So the Warriors’ starters (Curry, Green, Looney, Wiggins and new PG Denis Schroder) were a combined minus 173 in a recent loss to Memphis. GS fell behind by 22 in the first before things started getting really bad. Now they get the Lakers, who are actually playing halfway decent. There is probably not enough room for both teams to get into the top 6 and avoid the Play-In, and this game should give us an idea which one has an edge.DENVER NUGGETS at PHOENIX SUNS (10:30pm) Nuggets -1.0O/U - 233.0 Keep in mind that the Nuggets are just a middling team when they’re on the road. Two years ago, when they won the title, they actually were below .500 away from Denver during the regular season. They’re 7-7 on the road this year. There won’t be much left on Denver in Jokic gets hurt. Meanwhile, rumors are flying that the Suns would consider breaking up their own Big Three and sending Bradley Beal out of town – possibly to San Antonio.

Vegas Writer's NHL Morning Skate

by Vegas Writer

Saturday, Dec 21, 2024

Welcome to Saturday's edition of the "Morning Skate." While it's football heaven today with College Football Playoff action and two NFL games on tap, I want to make sure we're all aware there is plenty of NHL action before the league goes on its holiday break. There was an exciting seven-game card last night, including a potential Stanley Cup Final preview in Dallas, where the Rangers stole a 3-1 road win over the Stars.Let's take a look at the main highlights from Saturday: The Utah Hockey Club earned its fourth straight win and tied the fifth-longest point streak by a franchise in its inaugural season with last night's 2-1 win in Minnesota.Dylan Guenther scored twice to extend his point streak to seven games, which was already the longest on his team, to help Utah extend its win streak.Matt Murray made 24 saves to backstop Toronto past Buffalo, 6-3, and earned his first victory since March 23, 2023.After scoring a hat trick of power-play goals Tuesday, Patrik Laine cashed in again on the man advantage to help the Montreal Canadiens skate to their second straight win, a 4-3 win in Detroit.Through the first 74 nights of the season: Favorites are 311-214, including a 286-194 run. Unders are 261-232-32, and is currently on a 187-148-18 roll. We have 11 games on the card tonight, and I'm headed to Montreal for the return engagement between the Canadiens and Red Wings.Tonight's FEATURED GAME (lines courtesy DraftKings):Detroit at Montreal (+100, 6-over, -120)OUTLOOK: With last night's 4-3 win in Detroit, the Canadiens have won two straight and five of eight since Dec.3. In their two-game win streak, the Canadiens outscored Winnipeg and Detroit by a combined final of 10-4. The Red Wings had their two-game win streak snapped last night and have now lost seven of 10 since Nov. 29. I don't like the fact they're doing a one-off road game to complete this home-and-home before returning home for a four-game homestand. Consider the Canadiens to complete the sweep.

Vegas Writer's NHL Morning Skate

by Vegas Writer

Wednesday, Dec 18, 2024

Welcome to Wednesday's edition of the "Morning Skate." It's been a minute since I checked in, I know. But so much has been going on for me, especially with the NBA Cup being in town the past week. Add in the Thanksgiving holiday, some heavy UNLV action, plus the Raiders and Golden Knights, and my plate has been full. But let's play catch up after a 10-game card last night, including a pretty good showdown in Calgary, where Boston squeaked by with a 4-3 overtime win.Let's take a look at the main highlights from Tuesday: Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck was one of three 4 Nations Face-Off goaltenders to achieve notable feats while becoming the first netminder to reach 20 wins this season with a 4-3 win in San Jose. Then there was Ottawa's Linus Ullmark, who made 30 saves for his second straight shutout on the road and extended his winning streak to six games in Ottawa's 3-0 win in Seattle.Boston's Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves while David Pastrnak scored his 11th career overtime goal to help Boston secure its NHL-leading third multi-goal, third-period comeback win. Swayman registered his 90th career victory and became the second-fastest American goaltender in NHL history to reach the mark.Patrik Laine registered his 11th career hat trick to lift the Canadiens to a 6-1 win over the struggling Sabres. Laine (6 goals, 1 assist in seven games played) has scored each of his first six goals with the Canadiens on the power play.Three Metropolitan Division clubs picked up wins, with New Jersey (21-10-3, 45 points) overtaking the Capitals (21-8-2, 44 points) for first place thanks to a 4-1 win in St. Louis. At the same time, third-place Carolina (20-10-1, 41) gained ground with it 4-0 shutout of the Islanders, and the Penguins (14-14-5. 33 points) inched closer to a playoff position with their 3-2 win over the Kings. Through the first 71 nights of the season: Favorites are 299-205, including a 274-185 run. Overs are 225-247-32, but the Under is currently on a 178-137-18 roll. We have five games on the card tonight, and I'm headed to the high altitude of Salt Lake City for tonight's game with a potential Stanley Cup Final in St. Paul, Minnesota, where the Wild are hosting the defending champion Florida Panthers. There's also a solid non-conference showdown in Dallas, where the Stars are hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs. But I have my eyes on an entirely different game.Tonight's FEATURED GAME (lines courtesy DraftKings):Vancouver at Utah (-110, 5.5-over, -120)OUTLOOK: The Canucks arrive in Salt Lake City with a 16-9-5 mark for 37 points and slotted No. 1 in the wild-card race, and face the scrappy Utah Hockey Club (14-11-5, 33 points; 3 points back of WC2). With both scrapping in the Western Conference wild-card race, Vancouver is a dangerous team away from home, boasting a 10-2-1 road record with a League-leading .808 points percentage as the visiting team. But Utah has been playing well, having won four of five seven of 11 since Nov. 26. The thing I worry about with the Canucks is the first of a back-to-back, with tomorrow's game in Vegas. They may be looking ahead to the Golden Knights. Consider the home team in this one.
