- Analysis
- At 8:15 PM ET on Monday, we will be playing the Seattle Seahawks (266) minus the points versus the Chicago Bears (265). THE SITUATION: Seattle (4-3) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 20-3 win at home against Kansas City as a 2.5-point favorite last Sunday. Chicago (5-2) has won two games in a row after their 30-24 win at home against New England as a 2.5-point favorite on Thursday, October 22nd.
REASONS TO TAKE THE SEAHAWKS MINUS THE POINTS: Seattle came off the mini-bye after playing on a Thursday to tweak their offense by asking less of quarterback Sam Darnold, who has been taking too many sacks. The Seahawks offense ran the ball more and had Darnold deploy more quick passes that got the ball out quickly. The result was that Seattle generated 410 yards against a good Chiefs defense — and they held the ball for 35:51 minutes in that game. The Seahawks also held Kenny Walker and the Kansas City rushing attack in check as they held the Chiefs to just 50 rushing yards. This is Seattle’s formula for success — and they have covered the point spread in 10 of their last 12 games after not allowing more than 75 rushing yards in their last game. The Seahawks have not given up more than 94 rushing yards in three straight games — and they have covered the point spread in 8 of their last 9 games after not allowing more than 99 rushing yards in two or more games in a row. Additionally, Seattle has covered the point spread in 18 of their last 26 games after a straight-up win — and they have covered the point spread in 9 of their last 11 games after a straight-up win at home. They have also covered the point spread in 7 of their last 11 games after a win by 14 or more points. Furthermore, they have covered the point spread in 9 of their last 14 games after not allowing more than 14 points in their last contest. Reinforcements are coming for this showdown. Running backs Zach Charbonnet and Jadarian Price are expected to be active to bolster their rushing attack. The team also made a major splash by acquiring Indianapolis’ outstanding left guard Quenton Nelson in a trade — and he will be able to plug-and-play on their offensive line. The Seahawks stay at home, where they have covered the point spread in 7 of their last 11 games at home when favored. They have also covered the point spread in 16 of their last 26 games when favored. Darnold is usually at his best for these prime-time games. In his last eight contests on prime-time going back to his time with Minnesota, his teams have covered the point spread in all 8 contests — covering by an average of +11.8 Points-Per-Game. Chicago bolstered their roster with the acquisition of Tennessee defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons. The Bears defense is solid in many statistical areas — but the biggest red flag is that they are last in the league by giving up 6.3 Yards-Per-Play. They have given up 26.0 Points-Per-Game in their last three contests, with each of those opponents scoring at least 23 points. The bigger challenge for Chicago will be moving the ball against this elite Seahawks defense — and they will still be without their injured running back Kyle Monangi, who is their best power back. Seattle ranks third in Opponent Expected Points Added per Play Allowed and second in Opponent Success Rate Allowed. Against the run, they rank third in EPA and lead the NFL in Success Rate. Against the pass, they rank third in EPA and second in Success Rate. They also rank second in the league in Opponent 3rd Down Conversion Rate Allowed. The Bears have failed to cover the point spread in 9 of their last 13 games on the road as an underdog of up to seven points. They have failed to cover the point spread in 9 of their last 14 games on the road when the total is set in the 42.5-49 point range. The Seahawks are scoring 24.0 PPG — and in Chicago’s four games against teams scoring 24.0 or more PPG since Ben Johnson became their head coach, they have failed to cover the point spread in 3 of those games.
FINAL TAKE: Seattle has covered the point spread in 12 of their last 19 games when listed in the +/- 3-point range. 10* NFL Chicago-Seattle ESPN Special with the Seattle Seahawks (266) minus the points versus the Chicago Bears (265). Best of luck for us — Frank.
