- Gonzaga is coming into this game off of a 31-4 season and they were one of the better teams in the country. Their season was ended in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament though, losing 74-68 to a much lower seeded Texas. Gonzaga is returning some key pieces from last season and that is going to give them some continuity here, but this is also a team that has opened the season very overrated over the last few years and they still have some glaring weaknesses. They were in the bottom half of the country last season when it came to 3 point shooting and that is not something that is just going to improve right away for them. They are going up against a Purdue team that is coming off of a 30-9 season and they were one of the better teams in the country all season. Their season was ended in the Elite 8 by Arizona in a 79-64 loss, but Arizona was also a 1 seed as they were ranked 2nd in the country. Purdue actually beat Texas in the NCAA Tournament who upset Gonzaga in the 2nd round and Purdue also won the Big 10 Conference Tournament over Michigan who went on to win the National Championship. Now Purdue is coming into this season unranked due to all of the uncertainty in their lineup after losing most of the players that they have had the last few seasons, but they have still been one of the better programs in the country for years and Painter is a very good head coach who is going to have his team ready to go here. This is a tough game for Purdue to open the season with, but it is at a neutral site and not a true road game. They have the defensive talent to slow down this Gonzaga offense and they also have a lot of 3 point shooters who can do some damage and keep them right in this game. Purdue will cover the spread in this game.
