- #904 MILWAUKEE with Sproat (-) over Pittsburgh with Chandler at 7:40 PM EST
In a bad mood off yesterday's 3-0 shutout road loss to the Angels, the Brewers will return home and take care of business in this important division battle. Milwaukee's advantage in the NL Central rests at 6.5-games over Chicago and manager Pat Murphy will have his squad ready to go here.
Right-hander Brandon Sproat will toe the rubber for the home team. In four July starts against the Giants, Mets, Pirates, and Diamondbacks, No. 23 was tapped for eight earned runs and 17 hits in 17.2 innings of work. Brandon whiffed 16 and walked 12 on his way to a frustrating 0-2 record with a 4.08 ERA. On the season, Sproat has appeared in 20 games (18 as a starter) and allowed 52 earned runs and 83 hits in 92.2 frames. After the math, that adds up to a 3-6 mark with a 5.05 ERA.
Hitting the hill for the visitors will be young right-hander Bubba Chandler. Lined up against the Diamondbacks, Yankees, Brewers, and Nationals in four July outings, No. 36 was slapped for nine earned runs and 20 hits in 19.0 innings. Bubba struck out 14, walked nine, and failed to earn a decision on his way to a 4.26 ERA. Overall, in his two-year career with the Bucs, Chandler has seen the mound 28 times (24 as a starter) and been slammed for 67 earned runs and 116 hits in 136.0 frames. That equates to a 7-9 mark with a 4.43 ERA.
Several strong team trends support this investment. Milwaukee has grabbed wins in 103 of its last 181 when coming off a loss, 139 of its last 226 when playing in the comforts of home, and 176 of its last 281 when priced as a favorite. On the other side of the diamond, Pittsburgh has fallen in 95 of its last 152 as a road underdog and 77 of its last 140 in division play.
The Brew Crew have tasted victory in 85 of its last 138 when facing an NL Central foe and they will no trouble rocking the Pirates in this series opener. Take Milwaukee with Sproat. Thanks, and best of luck, Tom.
