- The Philadelphia Phillies made a charge at the Atlanta Braves in the National League East, but have fallen back to eight games behind the leaders. Despite their recent skid, though, they've now won two in a row and could be ready to make another run.
This is a good opportunity, as they start the week with the struggling Washington Nationals, who have dropped five straight.
After losing the finale of a three-game home set against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Nats dropped four straight in Atlanta, allowing 23 runs to the Braves. Including the loss to the Jays, they've allowed 28 runs in five losses - an average of 5.6 runs per game.
Now they have to face Phillies team that has won five of the seven meetings this season, with Philadelphia's wins coming by a combined final of 38-25.
These two most certainly put up some big numbers, with five of the seven meetings in 2026 landing on nine or more runs.
The Phils return home after a six-game tour through South Beach and Baltimore. They won the last two by a combined final of 13-0, and even though I'm not listing pitchers, I wouldn't be surprised if Aaron Nola finally gets on track tonight.
I know he's 3-9 with a 5.61 ERA in 22 starts, and is 0-5 with a 5.40 ERA in his last seven, but he has seen success against the Nationals during his career. In his lone start against them this season, he didn't take a decision, but limited them to two runs on three hits over five innings. And since 2022, he's 5-2 with a 3.13 ERA against them.
