- The Atlanta Dream are positioned to knock off the Las Vegas Aces Monday night as their defensive play, rebounding ability and deep arsenal of scoring options give them the tools they need to slow one of the league’s elite teams.
Atlanta showed it can hang with Las Vegas as the first matchup between these teams was decided by just one point. Las Vegas won 85-84 thanks to Chelsea Gray’s game winner with 3.6 seconds left on the clock. That means the Dream know they don’t have to play flawlessly to keep games close against the Aces.
Atlanta’s biggest opportunity may come on the boards. Angel Reese is pulling down 11.9 rebounds per game on her own, but Atlanta’s size and ability to grab offensive boards will cause problems for a Las Vegas team that has struggled at times against bigger frontcourts. Extra possessions will be key too, as they’ll allow the Dream to prevent A’ja Wilson from taking over games completely on offense.
It also won’t be easy for Las Vegas to focus their defensive energy on Wilson, as Atlanta also boasts plenty of weapons on offense. Allisha Gray leads the team in scoring at 19.1 points per game, but Rhyne Howard, Jordin Canada and Reese are just a few of the Dream players who can create their own shot. Atlanta averages around 89 points per game, so they have enough firepower to capitalize when Las Vegas overloads the defense on one player.
Atlanta is coming into this game with confidence as well after storming back from down 15 points to take down Dallas 82-81 on Saturday. The Dream dug deep on defense down the stretch of that game, showing they have what it takes to win another close game against a top-tier team.
Atlanta will also benefit from playing at home, which should open up shots for their perimeter players and lead to more energy on the defensive end. They own the rebounding battle, they’re riding some momentum and they’ve already pushed the Aces to the final possession once this season, so Atlanta has what it takes to come away with a win Monday.
