- Our 25* World Cup Group C Total of the Year is with the Haiti/Brazil over at 8:30 pm et.
Brazil will be anxious to get the three points from a victory tonight in a must-win game against Haiti after settling for a 1-1 draw against Morocco in their opening match in the World Cup last Saturday. The Selecao looked sluggish at times throughout that game, yet perhaps Morocco deserves more credit for frustrating the Brazilian scoring attack. In hindsight, Brazilian manager Carlo Ancelotti may have been content with a draw against a talented Morocco team ranked seventh in the world by FIFA that reached the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup. If there was a bright side for the Selecao, it was that Vinicius Junior scored their goal. While the 25-year-old left winger is one of the best professional players in the world for Real Madrid, his performances for his national team have rarely met that high standard. Taking one point in that opening match is fine, yet now Brazil needs to take care of business against a Haiti team ranked 83rd in the world by FIFA. Brazil can score goals in bunches against lesser opponents. In their four friendlies this year to prepare for this tournament, they scored 13 times, including six times against another CONCACAF opponent, Panama, on May 31st. Yet the Selecao’s defense can be leaky and get exposed in the counterattack. They conceded goals in all four of those friendlies. In their World Cup qualifying matches, they gave up 17 goals in their 18 matches, and they only have clean sheets in 33% of those matches.
Haiti lost its opening World Cup match, 1-0, against Scotland. Despite that setback, les Grenadiers impressed observers with their spirited play. They did not try to steal a low-scoring game. Instead, their best defense was going on the attack. They controlled possession against the Tartan Army 54% of the time and had 15 shots. Brazil only had 12 shots against Morocco. Haiti scored 20 goals in their ten matches to qualify for this World Cup. They scored 12 goals in their four friendlies leading up to this tournament, including against France in March in a 2-1 loss. They have several talented players with dual nationalities in Europe who opted to play for the Haitian national team. Manager Sebastian Migne has the speed that can threaten Brazil on the counterattack. Les Grenadiers scoring against the Selecao is a distinct possibility. Unfortunately, containing the Brazilian attack is unlikely. In their previous three matches against Brazil, they gave up 17 goals. If Morocco defeats Scotland in an earlier match today, then Haiti must upset Brazil to stay alive for one of the two automatic bids to the knockout stage. They will have to play aggressively to score goals, leaving themselves vulnerable to Brazil's counterattacks. Play the over.
Good luck - Team Del Genio.
