- Analysis
- Cleveland feels like they should win Friday despite the evenly matched records because the starting pitching battle tilts in their favor more than one might think. The Guardians will send Tanner Bibee to the mound while Houston will counter with Tatsuya Imai. Bibee owns a pedestrian 2-7 record but his 3.96 ERA and 1.18 WHIP are significantly more consistent than Imai’s 3-3 record alongside a 6.43 ERA and 1.51 WHIP, and that discrepancy in run prevention matters. Houston’s series preview listed Friday’s matchup as Imai vs. Bibee, which implies they know what’s up, and Cleveland’s game notes on Bibee indicate he’s been far better at limiting damage than his record would indicate.
Cleveland also holds a team-form advantage over Houston. They entered this series with a record of 40-35 compared to Houston’s 35-41 and Cleveland played Thursday beating Milwaukee 4-2. Parker Messick gave them six quality innings and Cleveland manufactured enough timely hits late, which has value because Cleveland gets to begin this series on steadier footing than Houston. The cleanest angle might just be that Cleveland does not need to hit a lot of homers if Bibee can give them six solid innings because Imai’s stats indicate there will be scoring opportunities. Any starting pitcher sporting an ERA over six while allowing more than one batter per inning to reach base typically provides offense with opportunities, and that is an enough uneven matchup for a methodical lineup to capitalize without needing to blast homers. If Cleveland shuts down Houston early and forces Imai to work, the Guardians have a formula for victory.
