- Analysis
- This is a short price for a #1 seed in the NBA playoffs and #1 seeds in Game 1 of Round 2 have gone 13-2 S/U and 10-4-1 ATS if favored by five or fewer points. Detroit didn’t impress in most of the first round, needing seven games to dispatch the #8 seed Magic but winning three straight games and dominating the past six quarters gives the Pistons a renewed focus and confidence. Both teams are in the same challenging situation that the 76ers were in yesterday, having to play Game 1 of this series just two days later after winning Game 7s. Detroit has a few extra hours in that turnaround, having played earlier on Sunday and staying at home should be an advantage in the set-up. Understandably the market isn’t showing a lot of confidence in the Pistons as a short favorite with early action on the road underdog Cavaliers, but Cleveland lost all three road games in Toronto in the first round, and the Cavaliers are now 17-27 ATS this season in road games with a 4-14 ATS run since late February. Cleveland was +8.5 in a three-point loss in Detroit in February and the win in Detroit this season for the Cavaliers was way back in October while these teams split in the Cleveland home games as well. Detroit was a winning ATS team as a small home favorite this season and the Pistons were 17-13 S/U in games this season decided by two possession finals including being a winning ATS team in those games when favored by four or fewer points. Teams that win a Game 7 in the first round and then go on the road for Game 1 are 8-10-1 ATS since 2003 and typically those teams catch more appealing underdog spreads, as this is just the third time since the format change in 2003 that a team in that situation has been an underdog of four or fewer points. Detroit’s offense has posted 116 points in back-to-back home games to offset the struggles early in the first round and it should be acknowledged that Orlando has a far more talented team in its full health form than a typical #8 seed.
