Analysis
Washington is going to take care of business against the hapless New Jersey Devils tonight at Capital One Arena in what will be the Capitals' third game of their four-game homestand. The Caps are 1-0-1 through the first two games of the homestand and are 7-1-1 at home since Jan. 31. Washington has earned three out of a possible four points against New Jersey this season, going 1-0-1. Alex Ovechkin reached the 25-goal mark for the 20th time in his 21-year career on Wednesday against the Ottawa Senators. Ovechkin's 20 25-goal seasons are tied with Gordie Howe for the most in NHL history, and with the Caps knocking on the playoff door with little time left in the season, I wouldn't be surprised to see the captain go to work tonight. By the way, Ovechkin is one goal shy of 1,000 career goals (regular season & playoffs), entering tonight’s game with an NHL record 922 regular-season goals and 77 playoff goals. He can become the second player in NHL history with 1,000 combined career goals, along with Wayne Gretzky (1,016). Remember, Ovechkin broke Gretzky’s all-time goals record nearly a year ago. Ovi owns the second-highest regular-season goals-per-game rate in NHL history at 0.59 (min. 1,000 GP). With Ovechkin going off tonight on home ice, it'll be a Friday night party, as the Caps defeat Jersey.
