- Analysis
- Washington is going to take care of business against the hapless New Jersey Devils tonight at Capital One Arena in what will be the Capitals' third game of their four-game homestand.
The Caps are 1-0-1 through the first two games of the homestand and are 7-1-1 at home since Jan. 31. Washington has earned three out of a possible four points against New Jersey this season, going 1-0-1.
Alex Ovechkin reached the 25-goal mark for the 20th time in his 21-year career on Wednesday against the Ottawa Senators. Ovechkin's 20 25-goal seasons are tied with Gordie Howe for the most in NHL history, and with the Caps knocking on the playoff door with little time left in the season, I wouldn't be surprised to see the captain go to work tonight.
By the way, Ovechkin is one goal shy of 1,000 career goals (regular season & playoffs), entering tonight’s game with an NHL record 922 regular-season goals and 77 playoff goals. He can become the second player in NHL history with 1,000 combined career goals, along with Wayne Gretzky (1,016).
Remember, Ovechkin broke Gretzky’s all-time goals record nearly a year ago. Ovi owns the second-highest regular-season goals-per-game rate in NHL history at 0.59 (min. 1,000 GP).
With Ovechkin going off tonight on home ice, it'll be a Friday night party, as the Caps defeat Jersey.
