#751/752 ASA PLAY ON Under 136.5 Points Furman vs Connecticut, Friday at 10 PM ET - Both teams play slow with UConn at 322nd in adjusted tempo and Furman 263rd. UConn ranks in the 11 nationally in defensive efficiency and Furman is the 2nd best D in the Southern Conference (efficiency). The Huskies allow just 65 PPG (9th in the country) despite facing a set of offenses this season whose average efficiency rank is top 55. They allowed only 8 teams all season (in 34 games) to reach 70 points and 3 of those teams were top 10 nationally in offensive efficiency. They should really slow down a Furman offense that was outside the top 200 in efficiency yet played defenses whose average rank was 356th. The SoCon didn’t have a single D ranked inside the top 170 and half of their defenses were ranked 300 or worse. They like to shoot the 3 but they aren’t very good at it making only 33% (210th) and they are facing a UConn D that ranks 15th defending the arc. The Furman defense can take away what the Huskies like to do and that is crash the offensive glass for 2nd opportunities. This isn’t your typical mid major team as the Paladins are actually the 5th tallest team in college basketball with two 6’11 starters. They are very good on the defensive glass which will limit UConn’s extra opportunities. Both teams rank outside the top 300 in percentage of points from the FT line so that should be limited as well. The Huskies have allowed only 1 team to top 63 points in their last 5 NCAA tourney openers and 2 of those 5 they held under 60. We think they get out to a decent lead and eat clock down the stretch. If this plays out as the spread indicates (UConn favored by 20.5) we should see any late minute fouling which can kill Unders. Low scoring here.
