- The Sacramento State Hornets haven't done anything to strike fear into many teams this season, but if there is one area we can count on them, it's how they've played at home.
Sacto State is 8-13 overall this season, and is 0-12 away from home. But the Hornets are stinging teams in Sacramento, boasting an 8-1 mark, including their last two games against two of the conference's best.
The Hornets beat third-place Montana State, 83-80, on Thursday, and then topped second-place Montana, 86-79, on Saturday. It was their fourth win in six games. And in their four home conference wins, they're averaging 86.2 points per game - eight points better than their season average of 78.2 ppg.
Another area I love is having a top-tier team when we have a near pick'em game is with a free-throw dominant team. The Hornets rank 25th nationally with a 77.3% success rate from the charity stripe. Music to my ears when backing a home team with such a low point spread. If it comes down to the end, we can count on the Hornets to get us points from the line.
As for Weber State, this is a team that just lost two straight on the road to Montana (81-65) and Montana State (91-88) and is 3-7 away from home, including a 2-2 mark in league play.
Adding fuel to the fire for the Hornets is a 95-82 road loss to Weber State on Jan. 3, part of a current 4-1 win streak in this series. In fact, the 'Cats have won eight of the last 10 meetings, so there is a lot of motivation for the Hornets in this one.
Let's back Sacramento State for tonight's BIG SKY GAME OF THE YEAR.
