Analysis
There was a 15 run explosion in Game 1 as the Blue Jays have taken the lead in the World Series despite significant underdog status. 15 runs in Game 1 came with only 12 combined at-bats with runners in scoring position with the lineups hitting .500 in those spots. There were four home runs in the game for 10 of the 15 runs while the teams combined for 10 walks. While that pace is not likely to repeat, the early innings of Game 1 could have been significantly higher scoring without home runs as the Blue Jays escaped significant traffic on the bases in the first two innings with only two runs allowed. Two early chances for Toronto also ended with double plays. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is less likely to fight the high pitch counts that Snell faced last night and he has very low walk and home run rates in his MLB career. Yamamoto now has a 2.82 ERA in seven postseason appearances, and he was spectacular in his Game 2 start in the NLCS. Yamamoto hasn’t pitched in this ballpark, but the Blue Jays also have not faced him and Toronto is the toughest team to strike out in baseball. Yamamoto did have a strong season in his road innings but also allowed 13 runs in his final six road starts of the regular season and four of his seven postseason career starts have finished with 10 or more runs including two of three this season as the Dodgers have hit well in his starts. Kevin Gausman has turned in good postseason results as well with only four earned runs allowed in 18 innings of work. Gausman’s career postseason numbers are decent but not great and his career splits vs. the Dodgers are also average. Adrian Johnson is behind home plate in Game 2. He called the 4-3 Dodgers win in Philadelphia in Game 2 of the NLDS, but overall has a clear ‘over’ track record in his recent years with 9.0 runs per game in his calls this season and 10.2 last season with a season average of at least 9.0 in five consecutive seasons. Gausman had a 4.94 ERA in his career pitching with Johnson behind the plate while Yamamoto has not pitched in one of his games yet. Toronto has scored at least four runs in nine of 12 postseason games while the Dodgers have scored at least four runs in seven of 11 postseason games. Both bullpens in this series are unreliable and had significant usage last night as another higher scoring game is very possible with the relentless approach up-and-down the lineup and the World Series stage adding pressure to the pitching staffs. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
