- Analysis
- Nebraska (5-2, 2-2 Big Ten) heads into this Big 10 matchup with Northwestern on a disappointing note, fresh off a 24-6 loss at Minnesota Golden Gophers where the Huskers were held without a touchdown and surrendered nine sacks. Meanwhile Northwestern (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) is coming off a 19-0 shutout of Purdue Boilermakers, its first shutout since 2017, powered by a dominant defense and reliable ground game.
For Nebraska, much of the hope lies with freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola (72.8 % completion rate, 16 TDs, 5 INTs) and running back Emmett Johnson (713 rushing yards, 7 TDs) to re-ignite the offense. But the concern remains their poor red-zone defense (allowing scores on 92.9% of trips) and susceptibility to pressure. Northwestern’s identity is built on defense - they allow just 15.1 points per game and rank 11th nationally in that category. Offensively, they’re modest (22.7 ppg) and rely on controlling tempo - averaging nearly 34 minutes of possession per game.
When this all comes together, it appears likely to be a game where Nebraska has the edge thanks to home field and superior offensive firepower, but the Wildcats’ discipline and defense make things tough. Too many points for a Northwestern team here on Saturday that can easily win outright.
