- Analysis
- Kansas State enters the matchup with a 3-4 overall record and 2-2 in the Big 12, while Kansas is slightly ahead at 4-3 and likewise 2-2 in conference play. Both teams are coming off a bye week, giving them time to prep and rest before this in-state showdown.
For Kansas, the offensive story centers on quarterback Jalon Daniels, who has completed nearly 70 percent of his passes for about 1,750 yards, 18 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions on the season. Their passing attack is efficient and they’ve shown the ability to strike downfield, but the Jayhawks’ defense has felt some pressure, especially inside the red zone and against the run, where they’ve ranked near the bottom nationally.
Kansas State, on the other hand, has shown flashes of balance with quarterback Avery Johnson and a ground game led by Joe Jackson. Their red-zone finishing and time-of-possession metrics have improved recently. But K-State’s defense remains a question mark, they’ve surrendered chunk plays and need to shore up consistency if they’re going to end Kansas’ long run in this rivalry (Kansas State has won 16 straight games versus Kansas).
Given the matchup and trends, the key will be whether Kansas can get out in front with the pass and force K-State into uncomfortable situations. If not, the Wildcats' balanced attack and Kansas’ defensive vulnerability could allow the road team to stay in contention.
Expect a competitive Sunflower Showdown. If Kansas is sharp and avoids mistakes, they’ll likely extend their season in Lawrence. I'll take the points with Kansas State.
