Analysis
Gold Standard on Missouri There's a Vanderbilt downfield passing game, but why this is all working is simple - just keep the chains moving. The offense is among the best in America at converting on third downs, mainly because it sets up plenty of easy third-and-short opportunities. The Missouri defense has the speed and defenders on the outside to keep QB Pavia - from taking off and making magic happen with his legs on those third down attempts. Let’s add that few defenses in college football are better on third down than Missouri. The Tigers opened up the season on a pretty nice run, bagging wins in each of their first five outings. Missouri took out Central Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, South Carolina and UMass in that quintet. In their home game versus Alabama on October 11 however, the Tigers ended up taking their first loss of the season. Missouri scored in all four quarters—but also gave up points in all four quarters—during a 27-24 loss. The 1-of-10 success rate on third downs didn’t help the cause, nor did the two interceptions for Missouri’s offense. Vanderbilt can’t run the ball. It’s not for a lack of trying, but there isn’t enough of a push, which puts the pressure on the passing game that’s having a massive problem completing throws over the last few games.
