- #978 BLUE JAYS with Scherzer (-) over Brewers with Woodruff at 1:37 PM EST
Off a pair of blemishes to the Brew Crew and with their lead in the AL East down to just 2.0-games over the Yankees, the Blue Jays will get after it in this critical interleague showdown. Toronto has a six-game road trip on deck (against the Reds and Yankees) and manager John Schneider and his boys need to go into those battles with a little momentum.
Veteran right-hander Max Scherzer will toe the rubber for the home team. With 12 starts completed this season, No. 31 has been nicked for only 28 earned runs and 54 hits in 66.0 innings of work. Max whiffed 61 and walked 16 on his way to a 5-2 record with a solid 3.82 ERA. In five August performances versus the Twins, Pirates, Cubs, Dodgers, and Royals, Scherzer was scratched for only nine earned runs and 24 hits in 31.0 frames. That's good enough for a 4-1 record with a 2.61 ERA.
Countering for the visitors will be righty Brandon Woodruff. So far this season, No. 53 has made nine trips to the mound and was tapped for 17 earned runs and 31 hits in 49.1 innings. Brandon struck out 63 and walked 12 on his way to a 5-1 record with a 3.10 ERA. Even worse, in his last two performances against the Diamondbacks and Cubs, Woodruff was waxed for eight earned runs and 10 hits in 10.0 frames. That's bad enough for a 1-1 mark with a weak 7.20 ERA.
There are a number of solid trends that support this Blue Jays investment. Toronto has tasted victory in 44 of its last 68 at home, 27 of its last 44 when matched up against a National League foe, 40 of its last 70 when priced as a favorite, and 32 of its last 57 when coming off a loss.
The Yankees are charging their way up the standings in the AL East and the Blue Jays need this victory in order to keep them in their rear-view mirror. Take Toronto with Scherzer. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
