- #230 SOUTH CAROLINA (-) over Virginia Tech at 3 PM EST
The Gamecocks and Hokies will hook up in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia and do battle in the second Aflac Kickoff Game (Tennessee and Syracuse will cross paths on Saturday for the first). The SEC has actually owned the ACC lately inking a tremendous 50-26 SU and 47-29 ATS record in the last 76 games including a phenomenal 37-16 SU and ATS provided the SEC team is competing on the road or at a neutral site and that bodes well for South Carolina in this contest.
You can bet your last buck that Gamecocks skipper Shane Beamer will be juiced for this contest. Shane played for the Hokies from 1995-1999 and coached in Blacksburg from 2011-2015 and this game will have special meaning for him. On a technical note, South Carolina has played very well on the road or at a neutral site in a season opener posting a proud 10-4 SU and 8-6 ATS record. Also, in six meetings against the Hokies dating back to the 1986 season, the Gamecocks own a reliable 4-0-2 SU and 4-2 ATS record.
For those of you haven’t been paying attention, Virginia Tech has experienced its own struggles posting a soft 27-34 SU and 27-32 ATS record in its last 61 games. In this run tackling a non-conference opponent, the Hokies fall to a poor 8-12 SU and 5-13 ATS including a shocking 2-10 SU and 0-10 ATS provided they are priced between -10 and +10 points. Also, as an underdog, head coach Brent Pry and his boys haven’t had much bite posting a woeful 5-20 SU and 9-16 ATS record in their last 25 games. If the Hokies are grabbing +10 or less, this team trend crashes to a miserable 4-14 SU and 5-13 ATS.
This matchup tilts in favor of South Carolina not just on paper but in the psychological chess game as well. The Gamecocks, emboldened by their road-tested grit and a coach with deep emotional ties to the opposition, will look to set the tone early in a series that has been dominated by the SEC. Take South Carolina. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
