- Analysis
- Seattle has dropped the first two games of this series with the Guardians, with Cleveland one of three teams now within three games of Seattle for the final AL wild card position. While it might feel like the Mariners are slumping going 4-4 in the past eight games while having a tough five-game slide before that, the past four losses have all been one-run results including the first two games of this series. Bryce Miller has a 5.98 ERA this season in his abbreviated season, but he was an excellent starter for the Mariners last season and he has had two difficult draws since returning from the IL, facing the Phillies and Padres, while catching some tough luck with five home runs allowed in those two starts. Cleveland has hit only 136 home runs this season, or 58 fewer than Seattle. Tanner Bibee is approaching 150 innings this season, but he has regressed considerably compared to his solid results the past two seasons. His K/9 is at a career low while his HR/9 and BB/9 rates are at career highs. Bibee had a decent first half but in just over 39 innings since the break his ERA is 5.95 and opponents are hitting 2.84 against him. Bibee has allowed at least four runs in all seven starts since the break. Seattle won in a game against Bibee in June, and the Mariners are 3-2 in this series on the season despite the narrow losses the past two days. Both teams have battled bullpen challenges in recent games, but Cleveland used their top two relievers yesterday while Seattle did not, and the Guardians of course no longer have Emmanuel Clase. Cleveland is only 5-9 since August 15 and they have scored only 16 runs on the current four-game winning streak. Seattle has scored at least four runs 16 times in August, and the Mariners have 31 road wins this season as this is a team poised to bounce-back from two coin flip defeats to avoid the sweep in this series.
