- The Cleveland Guardians are stuck in third place in the American League Central, but they're also three games off the pace in the hunt for an American League Wild Card spot. They're getting hot at the right time, having won four straight, including the first two of this series, the last two nights, 5-4 and 4-3.
Quite a turnaround after the Guardians lost nine of 10 mid-month, despite a stagnant offense that has struggled to bolster numbers. It's been the pitching staff that's gotten things done, with a 2.43 ERA during the 4-0 win streak, and an opponents' batting average of .209.
Meanwhile, the Marines have lost 11 of 16 since Aug. 13, and it's their pitching staff that's struggled much of the time, with an ERA of 5.58 while allowing 90 runs and 25 home runs.
Those latter numbers translate into a staff allowing nearly six runs and 1.6 home runs per nine innings.
Cleveland gets it done today, as it stays in the hunt for a playoff berth.
