NFL MVP Odds and Angles

by Harry Gagnon

Friday, Sep 26, 2025

As we enter Week 4 of the NFL season, we have had some surprises and some not so surprises when we try to figure out the MVP of the league. For example, unfortunately if you happen to be a Cincinnati Bengals fan it's not really a surprise than Joe Burrow (was 6/1 MVP) is hurt AGAIN and if you bought a ticket for him for MVP (like me) you might as well use it for toilet paper (I did).A couple of quarterbacks that are longshots but have been surprisingly good are the Seahawks Sam Darnold (90/1) and the Colts Daniel Jones (80/1). Now are either of them going to win it over Allen or Herbert (who I'll get to in a little bit) ? The answer to that question is probably not, but Darnold winning 14 games in Minnesota last season and Jones leading his squad to a 3-0 start (Colts averaging 33 ppg) are numbers that should not be ignored. If you think maybe the MVP could go to a player that isn't a quarterback at least this year, well, you can forget about it. Running backs Christian McCaffrey (150/1) and Saquon Barkley (100/1) are having subpar season stats-wise to start the season. Both are averaging less than 3.5 yards per carry and both have yet to rush for over 100 yards in a game. Some other QB's that are worth at least a mention are Jalen Hurts (16/1) who has 4 rushing TDS and his Eagles are 19-1 SU in their last 20 games, Patrick Mahomes (19/1) out of respect only because the Chiefs have no running game and KC doesn't have the weapons they need on offense, and finally Baker Mayfield (18/1) who is as gutsy a player as you will find, however Tampa Bay might be 3-0 but those wins are by a grand total of 6 points plus Mike Evans is now hurt. Now to my Top 3 guys who have the most legit shot at taking home the hardware for MVP of the league in 2025. The best value out of my top 3 is Lions quarterback Jared Goff (35/1). If you toss out the opener against Green Bay, Goff has 6 TDS in his last 2 games (is completing 78% of his passes this season) plus he helped hang 52 points on the board against Ben Johnson (his OC in Detroit last year) and was brilliant in taking down Lamar Jackson (3/1) on Monday night in Baltimore. By the way, if you think I'm snubbing Lamar I'm not but at 1-2 and the defense of the Ravens playing the way it is Lamar won't get there even at 3/1 odds. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is a genius with QB's and now you can add Justin Herbert (5/1) to the mix. Herbert and LA finally dethroned Kansas City's Kingdom in Brazil and that has propelled them to a 3-0 start. Herbert is a true leader who has 6 TDS, is averaging 290 passing yards a game (1st in passing yards before Thursday's game in NFL) and his team is not only 3-0 this season but are 3-0 in the AFC West.Of course I saved the best for last and the reigning NFL MVP, the Buffalo Bills Josh Allen (+250). More than the stats he possesses (which don't get me wrong are awesome) but it's the belief and leadership Allen shows every single week. Allen is completing 70% of his passes and the Bills have scored 30 points or more in all 3 wins, but he's the leader for MVP after how brilliant he was in Week 1's forth quarter crazy comeback against the Baltimore Ravens. Look, after this weekend, basically 1/4 of the season will be over, but there is a lot of time where things can change and change drastically. For now, again, after the first 3 Weeks of this NFL campaign my Top 3 for MVP are the current favorite in Josh Allen at +250, Justin Herbert who is finally turning heads with the Chargers at 5/1, and the only guy who has played in a Super Bowl, the Lions Jared Goff at a great value number at 35/1.

The Latest Heisman Trophy Award Update

by Harry Gagnon

Thursday, Sep 25, 2025

Through basically 4 games of the season the Heisman Award for College Football is certainly still up for grabs especially after Oklahoma Sooner QB John Mateer who was the favorite at 7/1 to start the week found out that he has a broken throwing hand and is done for at least giving him the hardware (now 100/1). We do however have some lineup of games this Saturday that bring enormous Heisman trophy implications. Lets begin with the rematch of the Big 10 Conference Title game a season ago between Oregon and Penn St. Now I'll start with Penn St QB Drew Allar who's currently sitting at 25/1. Allar has only 4 TDS against Nevada, FIU, and Villanova so even if he wins this game he's really going to have to do a ton more to really be considered, meanwhile I really like Oregon's QB Dante Moore who's 3rd at 11/1 for Heisman currently. Moore has been spectacular so far with 11 TDS and is completing 75% of his passes for the Ducks. In the other main game of the day we head south to the SEC where Alabama travels to Athens to take on the Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia QB Gunner Stockton (14/1) was tremendous in their comeback win in Knoxville, but his numbers are alright (7 total TDS) and have numerous tough games left on Kirby Smart's schedule. The value play to me is who Stockton is going against and that's 'Bama's QB Ty Simpson. You can still find Simpson who has 9 passing TDS and 0 picks at a lot of books at 20/1. (Also is completing 72% of his passes). After this 1st meeting in Athens for Alabama since 2015, the Crimson Tide's remaining schedule has them at HOME against Tennessee, LSU, & Oklahoma. As for the rest, here are players that were touted at the start of the season, but have fallen off. Utah's Devon Dampier's (65/1) lost at home to Texas Tech which hurt badly and Notre Dame's running back Jeremiyah Love (100/1) has basically no shot after the Irish started the season with two losses. Before I go, there are two other QB's we should really pay attention to and that's Georgia Tech's Haynes King (25/1) and current favorite at 9/1 Indiana's Fernando Mendoza. King does a lot of his damage on the ground than through the air (has more rushing TD's than passing TDS) plus the Yellow Jackets would really have to make some run to really have a legit chance. Ex-California QB Mendoza currently has 50 TDS in his career to 16 picks, but 0 of those picks have happened this season at Indiana. Mendoza just destroyed Illinois by going 21 of 23 with 5 TDS and this Indiana team in their last 3 games have outscored their opponents 192 to 19. At 9/1, I know it's still early and anything can happen, but Mendoza looks amazing with 14 TDS/0 Picks, plus when it comes to their schedule they catch a few breaks not having to face Michigan, Ohio St and current leader at 2-0 in the Big 10, USC.

ASA's NFL News & Notes

by ASA, Inc.

Wednesday, Sep 24, 2025

ASA’s NFL NEWS & NOTES SAINTS – Are 16.5-point underdogs in Buffalo next week... This is New Orleans' biggest underdog in any game since 1975 and the matchup that day was Archie Manning, Saints (+16.5) vs. Fran Tarkenton, Vikings.  There have been 83 underdogs of more than 16 points in the NFL since 1980 and those dogs have covered at a 55% rate (44-36-3 ATS) but were 0-2 ATS last season EAGLES – The Eagles are now a perfect 3-0 despite getting outgained on a YPG and YPP basis on all 3 games.  On Sunday they had a miraculous cover vs the Rams much to our dismay (Rams were our top game).  One of the toughest beats we’ve had.  Rams (+3.5) up 26-7 in the 2nd half and lose 33-26.  The ending was insane.  If you didn’t see it, which I’m sure you have, google it.  Eagles had fewer first downs, were outgained by 68 yards, had a YPP deficit of -0.8 and were outrushed 5.2 YPC to 3.2 YPC and somehow won by a TD.  FALCONS – One of the strangest box scores and result you’ll ever see.  Here are the stats for Atlanta @ Carolina on Sunday.   Falcons 332 total yards, Panthers 224 total yds.  Falcons 5.0 YPP, Panthers 4.1 YPP.  Falcons 5.7 yards per rush, Panthers 3.7.  Final score Panthers 30, Falcons 0.  Turnovers are usually an issue when you see a box score like this and they were.  Atlanta had 3 turnovers, including a pick 6, that led directly to 14 of Carolina’s 30 points.  The Falcons crossed midfield on 7 of their 11 offensive possessions and didn’t score a single point. PACKERS – That’s the NFL for you.  Green Bay looked like world beaters the first 2 weeks handling 2 of the top teams in the NFL (Detroit & Washington) and then lose as an 8 point favorite to 0-2 Cleveland.  GB led 10-0 with under 4:00 remaining in the game and lost 13-10.  The sequence went like this…Cleveland kicks a FG with 3:38 left to make it 10-3.  Packers Jordan Love throws an interception a few plays later that is returned by the Browns to the 4 yard line.  They score a TD to tie.  Green Bay drives into FG position, the attempt gets blocked with 27 seconds left and the Browns get into FG range and win the game.  We mentioned last week how good Cleveland’s defense is.  They held GB to 10 points on 230 yards (3.8 YPP) and the Packers averaged 2.6 YPC on the ground.  If they can somehow put together even an average offense, this Cleveland team can be really good. COLTS – Who had Indianapolis starting 3-0 both SU & ATS?  With NYG castoff Daniel Jones at QB their offense ranks #2 in scoring (34.3 PPG), #2 in total offense (419 YPG), #1 in YPP offense (6.6) and #3 in rushing offense (153 YPG).  Jones currently ranks #1 in the NFL in QBR.  They’ve punted ONCE this season and have scored on 77% of their offensive possessions!  The Colts are already +5 in turnover margin which is the #1 most important stat for success in the NFL.  NFL teams with a plus turnover margin in a game win that game between 75 and 80% of the time.  That’s a long term fact.  Now 2 of their wins have come against the Dolphins and Titans, who look like 2 of the worst teams in the NFL early in the season.  We’ll find out more about Indy this Sunday as they travel for the 2nd straight week to LA to take on the Rams. STEELERS – Pittsburgh is 2-1 on the season topping the Jets and Patriots and getting rolled at home vs Seattle.  However, this team is 30th in total offense (247 YPG) and 28th in total defense (386 YPG) for a YPG margin of -139 YPG which is the 2nd worst mark in the NFL ahead of only Tennessee who is 0-3.  They are the only team in the NFL that ranks in the bottom 5 in both total offense AND total defense.  In their 2 wins vs the Patriots and Jets they were outgained by 166 yards (-1.1 YPP margin) and by 123 yards (-1.4 YPP) respectively.  Pittsburgh travels to Ireland on Sunday to face Minnesota in an early 9:30 AM ET kick. TEXANS – What the heck is going on with Houston’s offense?  They rank dead last in scoring at 12.7 PPG.  That’s a full 10 points down from last season when they averaged 22 PPG.  This team has had 33 offensive possessions this season and scored a grand total of 3 TD’s.  The defense is holding up their end of the bargain ranking in the top 5 in PPG allowed.  Tough to be 0-3 SU & ATS when your defense is top 5 in scoring but Houston has found a way to pull that off.

NCAA Football Week 5 Top 10 Poll

by Wayne Root

Wednesday, Sep 24, 2025

This past Saturday was a statement for several ranked teams, who used the occasion to prove they belonged in the conversation for their respective conferences, while other teams failed to live up to the moment, resulting in some notable changes across the college football rankings this week. With conference play getting in full swing across the country, plenty more movement is on the way.  1. Ohio State BuckeyesOff this past weekend, the reigning national champion Buckeyes hit the road for the first time this season this coming Saturday in their Big Ten opener across the country against Washington, which sits at 2-0behind college football’s 4th ranked rushing attack. Ohio State plays a sneaky tough road game against a good Washington team. Ohio State's first Big Ten test comes this weekend at Washington, one of the most under-the-radar matchups on Saturday. The Huskies are unbeaten and unranked in anticipation of the national spotlight against the Buckeyes. The Buckeyes are loaded, although this will be their first road test of the season. We've seen the line drop from 10.5 to 8.5, so a lot of early money is on Washington keeping the game competitive.  2. Penn State Nittany LionsThere’s a lot to like about the Nittany Lions’ defense, which ranks among the nation’s five best in scoring, but there are still questions around if this passing attack is living up to its potential with all that talent. We’ll know more next week as Penn State welcomes reigning Big Ten champion Oregon to Happy Valley.Penn State hosts Oregon in one of the biggest games of the season. The Nittany Lions are -3.5 at home, and I think that line is pretty tight. If Ohio State and Penn State both win on Saturday, look for my top two teams to both be undefeated when they clash in Columbus on Nov. 1. Hosting a dangerous Oregon team. 3. Georgia BulldogsIn a good place after taking out rival Tennessee by three points the weekend prior, the Bulldogs were idle on Saturday, getting some needed rest before returning home to take on Alabama in one of the most consequential games in the SEC this season. I'm concerned about a Georgia defense that has been declining for two years and got lit up by Tennessee. Kirby Smart will feel great about his team if they're able to beat Alabama between the hedges this weekend. That would be the Bulldogs' second straight victory over one of the league's fellow elites and provides another quality mark in the resume column ahead of the selection committee's first rankings in a few weeks. Vs Alabama 4. Oregon DucksDante Moore had over 300 yards passing with 4 touchdowns and no interceptions as the Ducks predictably beat up on winless rival Oregon State in another tune-up before heading back east in a monster test of their Big Ten bona fides at Penn Stat this weekend. The Oregon Ducks are coming into this one hotter than expected with Dante Moore sizzling at quarterback. Despite Penn State's 3-0 record, it's unclear if the Nittany Lions' first three opponents have actually prepared this team for what they'll face under the lights in Happy Valley. Oregon has two more games against top 25 teams after this one and both come inside Autzen Stadium -- against Indiana and USC. Another unbeaten regular season and berth in the Big Ten title game should essentially guarantee a top-4 seed and first-round bye given the resume. At Penn State 5. Miami HurricanesDown a spot from last week, Miami found itself in a close game through three quarters last time out against Florida. However, the Hurricanes got two fourth-quarter touchdowns to eventually create separation in the win over the Gators. Whatever you think of the Gators and Notre Dame, those are two quality opponents that Miami dominated physically. Miami has a bye week this Saturday. 6. LSU TigersNow that we have a month's worth of data points for the Tigers, they're no longer our projected SEC champion. The win at Clemson isn't nearly as sexy given Dabo Swinney's abrupt fall and there are still running game issues to sort out offensively for Brian Kelly, who's now dealing with an injury to chief ballcarrier Caden Durham ahead of Saturday's bout at Ole Miss. I am still high on LSU, and the Tigers have a chance to earn a quality win at Ole Miss on Saturday. 7. Alabama Crimson TideYou know it's a huge Saturday when Alabama-Georgia isn't the marquee game. I still have question marks about both teams. On a two-game winning streak since the opening loss to the Seminoles, the Crimson Tide took this past Saturday off after putting up 111 combined points against Monroe and Wisconsin, but heads into another massive test for Kalen DeBoer, on the road against Georgia. Alabama hammered two bad teams but got rolled by Florida State. It's feasible that Kalen DeBoer's team could lose this weekend in Athens and still finish with 10 wins. Alabama obviously moves up with a win at Georgia this Saturday. 8. Oklahoma SoonersOU has been the biggest riser in my rankings the last couple of weeks after wins over Michigan and Auburn. The Sooners have a date with Texas on Oct. 11 in a matchup between two of the country's top defenses. OU quarterback, Mateer suffered the injury in the first half of Saturday’s win, though he still put together a monster day. Michael Hawkins will get the start in his place when OU comes out of the bye, but all eyes are on whether the Washington State transfer will be able to suit up against Texas. Note that their 2-point safety to cover vs Auburn is in the top 5 bad beats in sports betting. They get this weekend off on their bye.  9. Texas LonghornsArch Manning had his best game as UT’s starting quarterback in Week 4, going 18 of 21 and three touchdowns while adding two rushing touchdowns. Texas flew past Sam Houston State in the effort and will now prepare to take on Florida in Week 6. A much better feeling for Arch Manning, the subject of some big criticism after a sluggish start to the season, going off for 309 passing yards and 7 all-purpose touchdowns as the Longhorns smashed Sam Houston in a 55-0 rout with the SEC opener at Florida next. However, it’ll have to wait as Texas has their bye week.  10. Indiana Hoosiers Are the Hoosiers as good as their blowout win against Indiana last week? Any doubters who thought the Hoosiers were a one-year wonder were summarily silenced this weekend after Fernando Mendoza led an offensive blitzkrieg, putting away No. 9 Illinois by a shocking 63-10 count, a statement to the Big Ten and the country that this squad is in position to do something special again in 2025. They are at Iowa this week.

Inside The College Football Boxscores Week 4 - Part 3Fargo looks past the top line scores and goes deep into the box scores to get a better picture of what really happened for all of the FBS games the past weekend.Marshall 42, Middle Tennessee 28After a punt and an interception in the first five plays of the game, Marshall and Middle Tennessee erupted for five straight touchdowns with the Thundering Herd taking a 21-14 lead into the second quarter. The Blue Raiders then ran off 14 straight points to take the lead but Marshall took over with a 21-0 fourth quarter. The Blue Raiders were outgained by 73 yards but ran 23 fewer plays and outgained Marshall 7.8 to 6.3 yppl but had 12 penalties for 111 yards and were 3-11 on third and fourth down. Louisiana Tech 30, Southern Miss 20Southern Mississippi went three and out to open the game and Louisiana Tech scored two plays later for a 7-0 lead. The Golden Eagles responded with a four-play touchdown drive and after trading field goals, the Bulldogs regained their touchdown lead and then returned an interception for a touchdown and tacked on another score to take a 20-point lead at halftime. Southern Mississippi outgained the Bulldogs 514-339 but ran 23 more plays while four drives of 206 yards resulted in no points. BYU 34, East Carolina 13The defenses were the story in the first half as BYU had a 6-3 lead late in the second quarter and the Cougars then intercepted a pass deep in East Carolina territory and returned it for a touchdown. BYU scored the first touchdown of the second half and the Pirates could only respond with a field goal while the Cougars pulled away with another touchdown. BYU won the yardage by only 14 yards but that was on 17 fewer plays and it outgained the Pirates 7.0 to 5.2 yppl and won the turnover battle 2-0. Washington 59, Washington State 24The Apple Cup was a game for a while and then the Huskies took over and did not let up. Washington went ahead 14-0 on its first two possessions, the first off the opening kickoff and the second off an interception but the Cougars hung tough and pulled to within a touchdown at the end of the third quarter before the Huskies did not call of the dogs, winning the fourth quarter 28-0. Washington outgained the Cougars 471-304 on 12 fewer plays and scored on all eight possessions and once on defense. Indiana 63, Illinois 10Indiana blocked a punt for a touchdown to open the scoring and while Illinois responded with a three-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, the Hoosiers took over after that. They scored on their next possession and then added three second quarter touchdowns to take a 35-10 lead into halftime and then scored on four straight possessions in the second half. Indiana outgained the Illini 579-161 while holding them to 2 yards rushing on 20 carries (0.2 ypc) and nine first downs. Illinois was 1-10 on third down.Miami (FL) 26, Florida 7Miami took a 13-0 lead into halftime but Florida put together a long drive late in the third quarter to make it a one possession game yet the Hurricanes sealed it with an 80-yard, 11-play drive that took 7:12  in the fourth quarter. The Gators final four possessions resulted in 29 total yards while turning it over on downs three times. Miami held the Gators to 141 yard and seven first downs and did not allow a third down conversion in 13 attempts but its offense was not great with 344 yards on 4.5 yppl. Vanderbilt 70, Georgia State 21Vanderbilt spotted the Panthers a field goal to open the scoring and then scored the next 21 points in the first quarter. Georgia St. was able to go 75 yards to score a touchdown and the Commodores repeated by scoring the next 21 points in the second quarter. Vanderbilt neither punted nor committed a turnover while turning it over on downs twice as its only non-scoring possessions. They outgained the Panthers 635-290 and 8.9 to 4.3 yppl while the game was marred with 25 penalties for 208 yards. Virginia 48, Stanford 20Stanford went three and out to open the game and Virginia went 65 yards in seven plays to take a 7-0 lead but the Cardinal did respond with their own touchdown to tie the game. It took Virginia one play to retake the lead on a 75-yard touchdown pass, the start of three straight scores to open up a 28-7 lead and it never relinquished the double-digit lead. The Cavaliers outgained Stanford 590-321 and 8.0 to 5.3 yppl and they held the Cardinal to 35 yards rushing on 31 carries (1.1 ypc). Arizona State 27, Baylor 24No lead was more than a possession for either team throughout the whole game although Baylor only had one lead which did not come until the fourth quarter and it was just a one point lead. The Sun Devils and Bears then traded touchdowns late in the quarter until Arizona St. went 49 yards and hit the game winning 43-yard field goal as time expired. The Sun Devils outgained Baylor 400-357 but ran 18 more plays and the Bears had the yppl edge at 5.8 to 5.0 but they lost the turnover battle 3-0. Texas 55, Sam Houston 0The final score tells the story as it was never a game with Texas scoring a touchdown on six of its first eight possessions while adding a pair of field goals in there before taking the foot off the gas with a pair of late punts on its final two possessions. Sam Houston punted on nine of 11 possessions not counting the final end of game drive and the furthest it got was the Texas 42-yard line before an interception. When it was all said and done, Texas outgained the Bearkats 607-113 and 8.8 to 2.2 yppl. ULM 31, UTEP 25UL Monroe struck first with a touchdown concluding a three-play, 96-yard drive but the Miners responded with a 73-yard touchdown pass on their first play after getting the kickoff. The Warhawks then scored the next 24 points to pull away but UTEP tried to make a game of it as it put up 18 points on three drives of 78, 67 and 77 yards but threw two interceptions on its last two possessions. UL Monroe outrushed UTEP 250-33 but was outpassed 409-149 in a very unbalanced game from both sides. UTSA 17, Colorado State 16A suspect coaching decision cost Colorado St. a chance for at least overtime as it tied the game with 29 second remaining but with a UTSA penalty on the extra point, the Rams took the point off the board to go for two points and missed it. The Roadrunners opened the scoring on a 76-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter and never lost the lead. Colorado St. outgained the Roadrunners 407-345 but ran 15 more plays and was outgained 5.8 to 5.4 yppl while committing 11 penalties for 115 yards. Colorado 37, Wyoming 20After a pair of Wyoming punts sandwiched around a Colorado punt, the Buffaloes got on the scoreboard first, going 85 yards on 13 plays to take a 7-0 lead. The Cowboys responded with a solid drive down to the 10-yard line but had to settle for a field goal and Colorado then ran off 21 straight points to pull away. They had a sloppy end to the second half as they had a three and out, a fumble at the Wyoming one yard line and a blocked field goal attempt. Colorado outgained Wyoming 8.4 to 5.2 yppl. San Diego State 34, California 0The score shows a shutout but California was able to move the ball but lacked execution. The Golden Bears turned it over on downs at the Aztecs two-yard line on their first possession and it continued as they missed a field goal, coughed up a fumble, threw a pair of interceptions in a four-play stretch, one returned for a touchdown and turned it over on downs again. California was outgained by only 32 yards although it ran 21 more plays and was outgained 6.3 to 4.0 in yppl and was -3 in turnovers. USC 45, Michigan State 31Michigan St. kept this one close early as it was a 17-10 game late in the second quarter before USC went 88 yards and took a 14-point lead into halftime and then scored on their first second half possession. The Spartans got one touchdown back then recovered a fumble on the Trojans next play and cut it to seven points but the Trojans pulled away after that. USC outgained Michigan St. 523-337 while rushing for 289 yards on 40 carries (7.2 ypc) but was guilty of 11 penalties for 82 yards. Fresno State 23, Hawaii 21Hawaii opened up a 9-0 lead late in the second quarter with the offense generating only 69 yards as the defense got a safety and then returned a fumble 37 yards for a touchdown. The third quarter was not much better with 85 yards in three possessions but the Warriors got two field goals and still had a lead but Fresno St. took an eight-point lead following a pick six. Hawaii scored with 10 seconds left but missed the two-point conversion. The teams were separated by only seven total yards.

Inside The College Football Boxscores Week 4 – Part 2Fargo looks past the top line scores and goes deep into the box scores to get a better picture of what really happened for all of the FBS games the past weekend.Florida State 66, Kent State 10This was not expected to be a game and it certainly turned out that way. Florida St. racked up 775 yards of offense and 11.5 yppl and failed to convert only one third down in 10 attempts. The Seminoles scored on 10 of 12 possessions, throwing an interception to open the second half and turning it over on fourth down on their last drive. Kent St. scored its lone touchdown on a 75-yard pass and had only 131 yards besides that with 54 yards coming in garbage time on its field goal drive.James Madison 31, Liberty 13Liberty took a 10-3 lead in the second quarter and after a 10-10 halftime, the Flames retook the lead at 13-10 and then James Madison took over with a 21-0 run to close the game. In the second half, the Dukes scored on three of four possessions on long drives while the defense forced a three and out three times and made a fourth down stop. James Madison outgained the Flames 440-233 and 6.6 to 3.7 yppl while going 5-6 in the redzone and holding Liberty to 3-14 on third down.Troy 21, Buffalo 17Buffalo kicked a field goal on its first play of the fourth quarter to take a 17-0 lead and then the momentum went the other way. Troy went 75 yards after the kickoff for a touchdown, forced a punt and then went 66 yards to pull within three points. After two more forced three and outs, the Trojans went down and scored the game winner with 48 second left before stopping the Bulls on fourth down. Troy outgained Buffalo 365-278 but ran 21 more plays and both teams were dead even with 4.5 yppl.Michigan 30, Nebraska 27Michigan opened up a 10-0 lead on Huskers miscues and never trailed in the game although Nebraska was able to tie it on two different occasions. The first quarter could not have gone worse for the Huskers as they turned it over on downs at the Michigan five-yard line, missed a 43-yard field goal, threw an interception deep in their own territory and punted after losing nine yards. The Wolverines outgained Nebraska 391-351 on 16 fewer plays and outgained the Huskers 7.0 to 4.9 yppl.Oklahoma 24, Auburn 17Oklahoma forced a three and out to open the game and opened the scoring with a field goal and while Auburn tied the game twice at 3-3 and 10-10, the Tigers did not take their first lead until midway through the fourth quarter after a 75-yard touchdown drive. The Sooners responded with their own 75-yard drive to retake the lead and got a safety with a minute left for the seven-point win. They outgained Auburn by 16 yards and neither team could run, combining for 99 yards on 61 carries (1.6 ypc).UConn 31, Ball State 25After losing their last two games in overtime, Connecticut took the early lead and never gave it up while extending the lead to two touchdowns twice in the fourth quarter before Ball St. put up a meaningless touchdown with 11 seconds left. Despite never leading, the Cardinals outgained Connecticut 404-400 and 6.5 to 6.0 yppl but the Huskies were a perfect 5-5 on fourth down while sacking Ball St. four times and the Cardinals crossed midfield only twice the first three and a half quarters.Eastern Michigan 34, Louisiana 31This game was back and forth throughout with Eastern Michigan taking a 21-17 lead right before halftime. Louisiana got it back on a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the third quarter and that was its last lead with the Eagles eventually kicking the game winning field goal with three seconds left. While Louisiana had the pick six, it tossed two costly interceptions in the fourth quarter, one in Eastern Michigan territory and the other on their own side in a span of three plays.Duke 45, NC State 33NC State took a 7-0 lead three plays into the game on a 75-yard touchdown pass and after Duke tied it, the Wolfpack went on two more long touchdown drives to take a 20-7 lead. The Blue Devils then took over with a 21-0 run on three straight possessions, the middle one set up by an interception deep in NC State territory and the Wolfpack never got the lead back. NC State outgained Duke 535-418 but lost the turnover battle 4-0, went 1-4 on fourth down and had a chip shot field goal blocked.Mississippi State 38, NIU 10Northern Illinois struck first with a 30-yard field goal and then took a 10-7 lead on the first play of the second quarter and then Mississippi St. took over. The Bulldogs scored 31 unanswered points as the defense forced three punts, picked off a pass and stopped the Huskies on fourth down twice. They outgained Northern Illinois 452-267 including 292 yards rushing on 49 carries (6.0 ypc) but ran 17 more plays while going 4-4 on fourth down and holding the Huskies to 1-11 on third and fourth down.Georgia Tech 45, Temple 24There was no letdown for the Yellow Jackets as they jumped out to a 21-0 lead until Temple went 75 yards in 11 plays to cut it to 14 points and then recovered a fumble two plays into the second half and scored a touchdown two plays later to make it a one score game before Georgia Tech pulled away again. The Yellow Jackets outgained Temple 468-328 despite running 33 fewer plays as they averaged 9.8 yppl to the Owls 4.0 yppl as Temple won the time of possession by 15 minutes.Kennesaw State 28, Arkansas State 21Arkansas St. came out flat following its close game with Iowa St. as Kennesaw St. jumped out to a 21-0 lead before the Red Wolves tried to rally but fell short. The Owls scored touchdowns on their first three possessions but did their best to implode as they turned it over on downs at the Arkansas St. 21-yard line and then fumbled it away on three straight possessions to make it a game. Kennesaw St. outgained the Red Wolves 497-318 while gaining 30 first downs to the Red Wolves 18.Kansas 41, West Virginia 10It was a West Virginia letdown from the Backyard Brawl as the Mountaineers went three and out to open the game and allowed Kansas to go 50 yards in four plays to take a 7-0 lead. It did not get better as West Virginia punted on its next five possessions before finally connecting on a field goal but then it was 27 unanswered points for the Jayhawks including returning the second half kickoff for a touchdown. They outgained the Mountaineers 5.8 to 4.2 yppl and held them to 3-17 on third and fourth down.Delaware 38, FIU 16Delaware spotted the Panthers a 7-3 lead before running off three straight touchdowns, the first coming off an interception and scoring five plays later and the third on a 68-yard punt return. The Blue Hens were actually outgained by five yards with yppl dead even at 5.4 but they were more efficient by going 11-15 on third down. Delaware had only two second half possessions but made the most of them as they went 160 yards in 27 plays that took over 14 minutes off the clock.Boise State 49, Air Force 37Boise St. went three and out in its opening possession and Air Force then went 75 yards in five plays to take a 7-0 lead but the Broncos got it right back on its next possession and then scored the next two touchdowns to take a 14-point lead. The Falcons tied it back up after halftime but Boise St. responded right back and never lost the lead again. The Broncos outgained Air Force 592-511 despite running 17 fewer plays as they averaged 10.2 yppl compared to 6.8 for the Falcons.Coastal Carolina 38, South Alabama 20South Alabama struck first with Coastal Carolina countering right back and the Jaguars getting the touchdown lead back before halftime. The Chanticleers forced a punt to open the second half that went just 11 yards and tied the game three plays later. They then intercepted a pass on the next play and took the lead for good five plays after that. South Alabama outgained Coastal Carolina 420-294 but ran 24 more plays and both teams were at 5.2 yppl while the Jaguars were -3 in turnovers.Missouri 29, South Carolina 20After a scoreless first quarter, the teams alternated leads in the second quarter with South Carolina taking a 14-12 lead into halftime. Missouri regained the lead late in the third quarter with the Gamecocks again taking a two-point lead into the fourth quarter but the Tigers won the fourth quarter 10-0 as the defense allowed only nine yards in three possessions. Missouri outgained the Gamecocks 456-293 but that was with 25 more plays as the yppl were closer at 6.1 to 5.9 in favor of the Tigers.WKU 31, Nevada 16This was another back and forth game through three quarters with Nevada taking a 13-10 lead into the fourth quarter. Western Kentucky forced a pair of punts in the first two Nevada possessions and went 85 and 87 yards to take a 24-13 lead. The Wolf Pack made it a one possession game with 29 seconds left and the Hilltoppers then returned the onsides kick for a touchdown.
