Padres: 54-42, 2nd place NL West

The Tigers beat up on the Padres in Game 1 of this series 12-4 on Monday July 25th. Our prediction on this game failed.  (3-1 on Monday).  We skipped Game-2 of this series which will play tonight Tuesday 26th.  This prediction is for Game-3 on Wednesday night.  It will depend almost entirely on pitching as neither team has displayed an ability to win outright reliably.  It will help the Padres to have Yu Darvish on the mound, he is a reliable vet. But how does he compare?

The Padres of the National League West are coming off a good series against the New York Mets where they were able to snag a few wins (and have a chance at a sweep Sunday night).  The Padres desperately needed these wins!  The Padres have been full-time strugglers as of late. Relying heavily on 2nd stringers as they await the return of Fernando Tatis Jr to make or break their season.  The Tigers of the American League Central, on the other hand, are junk.  They don’t want to be… but they are a junk AL Central team that is already eliminated from the postseason unless a double Seattle sized winning streak is heading their way.  It is not.  However they do occasionally grab a bright spot and win a game or two.  The Tigers have Javier Baez and Miguel Cabrera… which would be great half a decade ago when they mattered.

The San Diego Padres have won 5 of their last ten games.  They are on a 2-game winning streak against the New York Mets before going into Game-3 that will close out the series.  They went 2-0 against the Mets, 2-1 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, 1-3 against the Colorado Rockies, and 0-1 against the San Francisco Giants over that stretch.  The bad part of the stretch is obviously so many losses to the Colorado Rockies… of course the Rockies have been built with only competing with National League West teams in mind.  The Rockies aren’t good… but they are built in response to these teams.  The Padres have Manny Machado… that is a great start.

The Detroit Tigers have won only 2 of their last ten games.  This horrible win percentage has become standard working procedure over the last month.  They are on a 2-game losing streak.  They went 0-1 against the Minnesota Twins, 1-1 versus the Oakland Athletics, 0-3 against the Cleveland Indians, 1-3 versus the Kansas City Royals.  If the Tigers were in a better division of baseball they would have a much worse record… instead they are in the worst division in baseball and they have a regular BAD record.  When you are getting trounced by the Indians and the Royals… there is literally no suny future you can point to.

The Tigers are 30th in scoring with 3.14 runs per game, 27th in batting average with .228, and 29th in OBP with .286.  It all goes badly at the plate. 

 

The Padres pitchers are 10th in ERA with 3.77, 6th in WHIP with 1.20, and 2nd in errors with only 38 on the season so far.

The Tigers pitchers are 21st in team ERA with 4.12, 16th in WHIP, and 11th in errors with 47 on the season.

Yu is more reliable over the long haul… plus the Padres should be dug in and embarrassed to keep falling further behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
