Just like the WTA Finals (I did a preview on that at the end of last month,) which ended yesterday, the ATP Finals is played once a year and is the biggest tournament in the game of tennis outside of the four Grand Slam's. After missing last year's event, Djokovic is back in the lineup for 2025. This should be epic.
Round Robin Groups & Bracket:
If you don't already know, everyone in the same group will play a match against the other in the 'round-robin' phase. After those matches are completed, the top two players from each group will be put in a Semi-Final & Final mini bracket to decide the winner. This is a unique tournament as it's the only one that could possibly have a winner that losses in the earlier stages of the tournament. Be prepared for upsets and awesome matchups throughout the week.
First Group:
#1) Carlos Alcaraz (Spain)
Carlos Alcaraz didn't have his best showing in Paris, and didn't have his best showing at the ATP Finals in 2024. That being said, he's undeniably one of the two best players in the world and the gap between them and the rest has been steady for about a year and a half now. He can't mess around in this group. But, he should redeem himself by playing well in 2025.
#5) Taylor Fritz (USA)
It was going to be hard for Fritz to get out of this group considering his record against the top two. However, Djokovic pulled out for the second year running. Also, if anyone can do it, it's one of the top ranked American player in the world at the moment. He's upped his game tremendously over the past season since making the final in last years event and earned this much deserving spot at this year's ATP Finals.
#6) Alex De Minaur (Australia)
Somewhat of a mystery, Alex De Minaur can be great on his day. However, he's not going to be the favorite to get out of this group, especially with guys like Fritz/Alcaraz ahead of him. He will make things interesting, and could very well knock off Lorenzo Musetti, but it's hard to see him advancing.
#8) Lorenzo Musetti (Italy)
As the last player to qualify, having reached the Semis/Finals in Athens at the Belgrade Open, Musetti probably feels slightly fortunate that Felix Auger-Aliassime pulled out of Metz to give him the chance. Luckily for him, Novak Djokovic also pulled out, leading to a spot in this year's Final. He's definitely got the skills to hang with the best. But, it's going to be tough to win any of his matches this week, just like De Minaur.
Second Group:
#2) Jannik Sinner (Italy)
Like I mentioned last year, Sinner is an incredible talent with the sky as the limit. Him and Carlos go back and forth for the #1 spot in the world and anyone could claim that title on any given day. The defending champ is going to be looking forward at this opportunity to repeat as best in the world once again.
#3) Alexander Zverev (Germany)
Alexander Zverev just saw Jannik Sinner a couple of weeks ago in Vienna. He won a set in that match and was oh-so-close to knocking him off and claiming the ATP 500 title. However, it wasn't his daw and I don't think it will be again when they match up here in Turin. He might advance, but his opening round match against Shelton will be huge.
#4) Ben Shelton (USA)
Ben Shelton is an absolute force on the serving end of things. His return game could use a bit of help at times though. He's going to need to bring his A-Game against both Musetti & Zverev. But, I think that if he does, he'll see himself in the knockout round. All eyes on his first match on Sunday.
#7) Felix Auger Aliassime (Canada)
The Canadian had a roller coaster of emotions having been in a qualifying spot, then not, then now yes again. He's going to be the #7 seed in the tournament having seen Novak Djokovic pull out. That being said, he's playing absolutely amazing tennis right now, and could be one of the dark horses, if he stays healthy.
Burns' Final Prediction:
With so many great matchups going to be played over the course of the second full week in November, I believe that there's definitely going to be a few upsets and dominant performances along the way. There's so much variety and differences of play, just out of these eight players in the 2025 ATP Finals.
While it's obviously tough to predict a winner after seeing what we saw in the WTA Finals, I still believe that these two guys are on a level of their own at the moment compared to the rest of the field. It's an absolute treat every time we get to watch these two players and what better way to cap off the season than to see #1 and #2 go at it in another final.
Final Prediction: Sinner beats Alcaraz.
